We've all probably seen a TikTok or YouTube short about some celebrity who was involved with a cultural controversy by misappropriating a certain culture or ethnicity. But have you ever wondered what those words really meant, and how to tell the difference between the two? Whether it be from Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus to famous Harry Potter writer J.K Rowling, buckle up to embark on the cultural rollercoaster of cultural appreciation and its sneaky twin!

Cultural Appreciation: Good Vibes Only

Imagine you are a pirate traveling the seven seas, and every inch of the world. That is what cultural appropriation means! It's like being teleported into an unknown country and trying to navigate its ways of life. This could mean balling out in a cool kimono because you're very genuinely fond of Japanese clothing or by trying to do Indian henna art, this is creating a positive atmosphere for a space to learn and embrace other people's culture. But remember to be respectful pirates, and respect the rules of the lands you visit!

Moving on riders, we're in for a bumpy turn so hold onto your seat belts… here we go! Imagine this, you're scrolling on TikTok and then you see it. That hairstyle… the shirt, you just adore it! So you take a picture, quickly order it on Amazon and the next thing you know you've posted it on your story, and made a TikTok with it. Bam! Now you're caught in the web of cultural appropriation! It's simply taking someone's language, art, clothing, appearance or even way of life, without acknowledgment, respect, or care towards the value it has in that culture.

QUICK POLL 😊

Have you ever engaged in cultural appreciation with the intention of learning and embracing another culture?

  • Yes, I have.

  • No, I haven't, but I'm interested in learning more.

  • No, I haven't, and I'm not interested.

Are you ready to rock the fashion world of cultural appreciation? Well then, I'll let you in on a secret… The first and most important rule is that knowledge is your secret weapon! Before diving into that traditional attire, or makeup, or imitating a language, dive deep. Pretend to be a reporter trying to get a scoop at the roots, its story and why exactly is it so important? 🤔

The second rule is that it's all about your intention. We've probably heard about intent vs impact a million times now, but it truly does matter why you want to wear a piece of traditional clothing, or speak in a cultural way. Going back to that reporter, if you wanted to find out the meaning with a good intention, the impact-- the way you write your exposé, will be reflected in a positive light.

Calling all teenagers! Remember that you're the game-changers, the one's whose actions will create a path of change! Know that the road to being a cultural appreciation pro starts with being curious and respectful every day! Start embracing the beauty of cultures, spread positive vibes and when in doubt, do a quick culture check. If you're rocking that qipao dress because you appreciate the Chinese heritage behind it, then go for it! But if you're doing it for the looks, then maybe it's time to reconsider.
